Autoerotic Fatalities
Authors:
Robert R. Hazelwood, Park E. Dietz, Ann W. Burgess
This book deals with the empirical study of 150 deaths occurring during the practice of dangerous autoeroticism. It is something of a hybrid between a text with case materials and a research monograph. At the time of its’ printing in 1983, the publishing industry was much more conservative than it is today and consequently the book contains no photographs. However, it is unique because it remains the largest study conducted on asphyxiation for sexual purposes and is believed to be the only book published on this difficult subject. The intended audience was law enforcement, medical and mental health but it is useful for clergy, educators, attorneys and insurance adjustors.
The authorship adds to the uniqueness of the book. Robert (Roy) Hazelwood was an FBI Agent assigned to the famed Behavioral Science Unit at Quantico, VA; Park Dietz, a forensic psychiatrist of international renown, was affiliated with the University of Virginia and Ann Wolbert Burgess, former dean of psychiatric nursing, was with the Department of Health and Hospitals in Boston, MA.
